Lancaster native Mike Janis heads from one “Queen City” – Buffalo – to another – Charlotte, North Carolina, for this weekend’s running of the Carlyle Tools NHRA Carolina Nationals, featuring the NHRA Pro Mod Series in addition to the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. Janis is coming off his second win of the season – and second of his career in the NHRA – at the prestigious Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, which took place Labor Day weekend at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.
“It was amazing,” said Janis of the U.S. Nationals victory. “You race your whole life to win Indy. It still hasn't sunk in yet and to run as well as we have this year is just awesome.”
With three races left on the 10-event Pro Mod schedule, Janis sits third in points, 112 behind leader Rickie Smith and just 14 points back of second-place Troy Coughlin. “The game plan is just to run consistent, qualify and keep going rounds,” said Janis. “We are about four and a half rounds out of first and will be as ready as we can be.”
Janis likes racing at zMAX Dragway because it’s like a home away from home.
“Charlotte is awesome,” said Janis. “So many people from back home here in Buffalo live down there and the support is great. Winning at Charlotte would be just as awesome. We love it down there. This is the best and safest place in the world to drag race. The NHRA Safety Safari is incredible and deserves more credit than they get. (NHRA Chief Starter) Mark Lyle does an amazing job running the show up there.”
The NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series will qualify at zMAX Dragway on Friday at 3:30 and 6:15 p.m. ET and Saturday at 2 p.m. ET. The first round of eliminations for the Carlyle Tools NHRA Carolina Nationals is Saturday at 4:15 p.m. ET; eliminations continue on Sunday.
The NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series season continues with the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals in St. Louis, September 27th through 29th and concludes in Las Vegas at the NHRA Toyota Nationals, October 24th through 27th. Keep up to date with the NHRA at www.nhra.com.
