Congratulations to Janet Hong of Chesapeake! She is 73 years old and she is the first woman to win the Virginia Chapter of Ducks Unlimited's 13th annual duck stamp artwork competition. She is now personalizing 1500 reprints that Ducks Unlimited will give to its top financial contributors. She says; “I guess this is my 15 minutes of fame.”
She had to hand-paint the birds on each of 35 remarque (which is a small personalized drawing) “Conservation Prints” for top donors. She was paid $1500 for her winning print. This year's print shows a pair of hooded mergansers that are floating in an isolated pond. It will appear on this years stamp that must be bought, in addition to a federal stamp, in order to hunt water fowl in Virginia.
The winner is normally a bird that is hunted and eaten, the Mergansers are not, according to Wayne Jarman, the Virginia Ducks Unlimited co-chairman.
