Jane's speech really captured the essence of Cory's genuine spirit. She talked about his star quality, and his genuine sweetness that made it impossible not to fall in love with him.
As she reflected, "all that warmth, that charm, that open-hearted quality that we loved in Cory was no act."
There's been some controversy over the decision to honor the late Canadian actor at the Emmys. Critics such as Jack Klugman's son, Adam, felt that his father was unfairly snubbed, and that Cory was undeserving of this tribute. He also cited the unfortunate circumstances in which Cory left this world.
Yet during the controversy, Jane showed her class. She made a point to understand where Adam was coming from. As she told TMZ on September 22, "I'm a huge fan of Jack Klugman. Obviously, I don’t choose these things. But he was there in the beginning of television, and he had a terrific career, and if I were his son, maybe I would be upset, too."
Still, this didn't stop her from giving her co-star the tribute that he deserved.
In reference to his struggles with substance abuse, Jane commented that "Cory was a beautiful soul. He was not perfect, which many of us can relate to. His death is a tragic reminder of the rapacious senseless destruction that is brought on by addiction."
She continued, "tonight we mourn the loss for all he was, and all he could have been. To a generation that loved Cory so, please know this gifted and wonderful young man was worthy of your love."
