Two years ago today, on January 25, 2012, Jane Bashara was found dead in the back seat of her SUV in an east side Detroit alley. She had been beaten about her upper body and strangled to death. Investigators said that there were signs she put up a mighty struggle before her death.

Jane Bashara was a 56-year-old senior marketing manager for KEMA Services, an energy consulting and testing company. She held bachelors and master’s degrees in business administration from Central Michigan University and the University of Detroit Mercy. She had two children and had previously been president of the Grosse Pointe South Mother’s Club.

Bashara’s husband, Bob Bashara, was a businessman who managed multiple rental properties. Bob and Jane Bashara head been married 26 years at the time of her death.

Bob Bashara was quickly listed as a person of interest after he failed a police polygraph. Police said that they believe Jane Bashara was murdered in her home. The Middlesex drive estate in Grosse Pointe Park was then searched.

Bob Bashara told police he arrived home at approximately 8 p.m. on the night of January 24th to find his wife missing, he called police at 11 p.m. He said he spent part of the evening at the Hard Luck Lounge, which is one of the properties he owns.

It is later discovered that in the basement of the Hard Luck Lounge was a sex dungeon, equipped with whips, chains and mattresses. It was reported that Bob Bashara frequented the dungeon with several different women.

It was widely reported that Bashara was having an affair with a Wayne State University employee. Local ABC News reporter’s uncovered documents that show he and the woman were looking to buy a house 5 minutes away from where he and Jane lived.

On Jan. 31, 2012, a memorial was held for Jane Bashara, at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church. She is eulogized by hundreds: Bob Bashara sat in the front row.

On the same day as the memorial service, Joseph Gentz, a 48-year-old local handyman who had previously done work for Bob Bashara, walked into the Grosse Pointe Park police department and confessed to the murder. He told investigators he killed Jane Bashara in the garage of her home after Bob Bashara offered him money and a vehicle to do it. He says Bob Bashara was in the garage at the time of the murder, with a gun in his hand demanding Gentz finish the job, as Jane was pleading for her life.

Gentz was eventually arrested for the murder.

On June 23.2012 Bashara is arrested for solicitation to murder a witness. He allegedly offered Detroit furniture store owner Steve Tibaudo $20,000 to have Gentz killed in jail.

On December 12, 2012 Joseph Gentz pled guilty to Jane Bashara’s murder. Jn a plea deal worked out with prosecutors, Gentz received a 17- 28 year sentence and is to cooperate with prosecutors.

Bob Bashara is in prison after pleading guilty to the solicitation to murder charge. He is awaiting trial for the murder of his wife.
