Reading a Jane Austen novel with a cup of tea is an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. Now, that experience can be enhanced further with tea made in honor of the author of "Pride and Prejudice" and "Persuasion". Lido Gallery in Birmingham sells Literary Teas, custom tea blends inspired not only by Jane Austen, but Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Oscar Wilde and Edgar Allen Poe.
There’s a variety of flavors: from the Jane Austen green tea, flavored with rose petals, to a full-bodied Oscar Wilde black tea. Each package displays the author’s likeness and contains 1.5 to 2.5 ounces of loose tea. These tea blends are created by, and exclusive to, the Lido Gallery.
The Lido Gallery, owned by Diane DeCilla, recently moved from Southfield, where it resided as The Print Gallery for over 30 years. Renamed in 2010, the Lido Gallery moved to its new Birmingham location last fall and DeCilla said it fits well with the community.
Other exclusive items to the Lido Gallery are American Rocks! and Masterpiece Sweets, the latter of which was recently featured in O Magazine as an Oprah find. These are framed pictures by famous artists that are made out of gourmet chocolate. There’s a postcard included to replace the edible work of art, so once you've sampled the candy, you can still display Monet's Water Lilie's or Van Gogh's Starry Night. With Masterpiece Sweets, you can have your dessert and eat it, too.
In keeping with the Lido Gallery's art with good taste, America Rocks! are faux, miniature minerals made of chocolate or jelly. There are candy rocks to represent every state and each package includes a specific geological fact. (There's also a similar line of Zodiac Rocks!, which match up with all the astrological signs - except the recently added Ophiucus.)
