Janay Mcfarlane, an 18-year-old from Chicago, was shot in the head on Friday while her sister sat close to President Barack Obama, “listening to him push for gun control legislation.”
Mcfarlane was visiting family and friends in Chicago when she was murdered. She leaves behind her 3-month-old son.
“North Chicago police said two people are being questioned in connection with Mcfarlane's death, but no charges have been filed” according to the Huffington Post.
Angela Blakely, the victim’s mother, said the bullet was meant for a friend. She also expressed her grief by saying, "I really feel like somebody cut a part of my heart out."
Ironically, hours before Mcfarlane was gunned down, her 14-year-old sister “was feet from Obama at Hyde Park Career Academy, where he spoke about gun violence and paid tribute to Hadiya Pendleton, the 15-year-old honor student fatally shot last month in a South Side park.”
Blakely said her daughter always had sympathy for children whose mothers passed away. Mcfarlane felt sorry that the mothers would not be there to nurture their babies.
Chicago is known for having a high homicide rate. What can be done to help make this city a safer place to live?
