September is here, and that means new gallery exhibitions at Newark’s most prominent galleries. In particular, Gallery Aferro is set to exhibit four artists in their main gallery and new media room. The most anticipated show is Reflections on Everyman: The Work of Jan Sawka is a collaboration with the Polish Cultural Institute and Polish American Business Club. In celebration of the artist, Jan Sawka, Aferro will be showing a retrospective of his body of work; which includes paintings, sculptures, book arts, illustrations and a massive 10-story stage set designed for The Grateful Dead.
Artist Jan Sawka was born in Poland in 1946 and was expelled from the country after expressing anti-totalitarianism in his artwork. In 1977, he became the most sought after editorial illustrator for The New York Times and, as time progressed, he was showing work in over 60 museums and had over 70 solo exhibitions under his belt. Jan Sawka died of a heart attack back in December of 2012.
Reflections on Everyman will open September 12.
