From Lee Daniels, the Oscar-nominated director of Precious, comes the Golden Globe-nominated film The Paperboy which he directed and co-wrote the screenplay. Based on Pete Dexter’s provocative best-selling 1995 novel of the same name, it boasts a star-studded cast that includes Matthew McConaughey, Zac Efron, John Cusack, Nicole Kidman, Macy Gray, Scott Glenn and David Oyelowo.
In the backwaters of steamy 1960s South Florida, the sexually and racially charged film noir is narrated by Macy Gray telling the tale of the violent swamp-dweller Hillary Van Wetter, who was convicted of murdering a corrupt local sheriff. While in prison, he becomes pen pals with the sultry, white trash death-row groupie Charlotte Bless. Believing Wetter is innocent, she asks for help from Miami Times investigative reporters Ward Jansen -- a closeted gay Caucasian -- and Yardley Acheman -- an African American man pretending to be British. Hungry for a career-making story, they try to prove Wetter was framed with the help of Charlotte and Ward’s younger brother Jack, who falls madly in love with her (even after she pisses on him). As racial and sexual tensions build up, greater dangers lurk in the Florida bayou after exculpable evidence wins Wetter’s freedom.
