In roller derby, the concept of having an "off season" is debatable. While most seasons do conclude at year's end, training never ceases. Creating two camps in derby-dom: those who desire time to recharge, and those who want only to roll. A division which is only exasperated in FL, where the hindrances of winter amount to snowbirds and sand spurs.
The Bradentucky Bombers, by scheduling their first 2013 bout in January, have made it known to all which camp they belong to.
Returning to the Astro Skate Center in Bradenton after their residency at the Manatee Civic Center, the Bombers are inaugurating the new year with Furies vs. Sirens; "an intraleague game featuring [Bradenton's] two teams the Bombshells and Bomb Squad along with guest skaters from other nearby leagues."
Keeping in the theme of their past bouts, the Bombers will be aiding another local organization, the Community Coalition on Homelessness. Recognizing that if you're "having trouble making house payments, keeping your electricity and water turned on, or looking for a more affordable housing situation in a safe environment, you have very few options for help available to you in Manatee County." As such, the Community Coalition on Homelessness seeks to "provide [the] basic services [needed to] help people move on a path to improve their situation, and ultimately, [lead] to independence."
So bring some toiletries with you to donate, along with the beach chair out of your trunk, to Bradenton's Astro Skate, to help the Bombers ring in the new year right.
