While most eyes in the community were locked in on the first stop of the Road to Evo circuit, SoCal Regionals, Insomnia VGC held their first Super Street Fighter 4 AE 2012 tournament of the year. Some of the top competitors from last week's AE tournament at Monsters Arcade were among the 21 entrants to see who could claim the first title of the young season.
Once the bracket went up, the four names that stood out were David "Reach" Bonaduce, Bagels, AB Jan Del Rio, and last week's champ, Anas "Hunted Chimera" Khan. As luck would have it, the four players happened to end up separated until the semifinals. Even though the competition appeared to be tough, the four players managed to advance to the top 4. While Bagels would fall to the top seeded Chimera, Jan pulls off the upset over Reach in the other semifinal. In the winners final, Chimera overwhelmed Jan.
Over in the losers bracket, Word and Christian "BeastChan23" Jordan made strong runs to the 5th place matches, but both would lose to Reach and Bagels respectively. Bagels would take down his buddy reach in the 4th place fight, leaving him to face off with Jan. Jan was able to hold off Bagels and setup a rematch in the grand finals against Chimera.
Jan tried to switch back to his old Zangief after playing Seth for most of the tournament. But the change didn't help as Chimera's Fei-Long was just too much for him to handle. Previously, I remember Chimera showing up to one of PZ's weeklies and doing very well. Now it appears he's become one of the players to watch out for now with back to back wins at Monsters and now Insomnia. Congratulations to Anas on his latest victory and hopefully we'll see him make some noise at Texas Showdown in April.
