Novelist Stephen Elliott makes his directorial debut in the gritty drama film About Cherry that takes a voyeuristic look at the adult film world. Based on a script written by Elliott and adult actress Lorelei Lee, the all-star cast includes Ashley Hinshaw, James Franco, Heather Graham, Dev Patel and Lili Taylor.
It tells the story of 18-year-old high school student Angelina whose life choices lead her from Los Angeles to San Francisco and into the fetish-filled adult film world. Stuck in a dead-end job at the laundromat and living with her alcoholic mother and lecherous stepfather, Angelina is convinced by her sleazy boyfriend Bobby to sell naked photos of herself to make some extra money. Initially hesitant, she reluctantly agrees, but Bobby has second thoughts after the fact. In the end, she uses the money to run away to San Francisco with her platonic best friend Andrew to start a new life.
Working as a cocktail waitress at a strip club, Angelina meets and starts dating the wealthy, coke-addicted attorney Francis who lavishes her with expensive gifts and introduces her to a glamorous world far different from what she has ever known. She also meets former porn star turned adult film director Margaret who becomes her mentor. Adopting the screen name Cherry, she launches her porn star career, quickly graduating from solo shoots to girl-on-girl, fetish and guy action. However, life complications erupt for Angelina when she finds Andrew masturbating to her porn videos and Margaret develops lustful feelings for her. Matters worsen when her mother discovers how her daughter is supporting herself during an impromptu visit, her younger sister gets molested at home and Francis turns out to be a con artist. Through it all, Angelina maintains her youthful innocence as she titillates in front of the camera for her lascivious voyeurs.
