From Academy Award nominee Bennett Miller, the director of Capote, comes the biographical sports drama film Moneyball starring Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robin Wright, Chris Pratt, Kerris Dorsey, Stephen Bishop and Brent Jennings. Based on Michael Lewis’ 2003 book of the same name, the film tells the true story of Oakland Athletics’ general manager Billy Beane during the 2002 season. After losing to the New York Yankees in the 2001 postseason, Beane must come up with a way to build a competitive team for 2002. Faced with a limited budget and the loss of several star players Johnny Damon, Jason Giambi and Jason Isringhausen, he comes up with an innovative way to save his team with the help of Peter Brand, a young, number-crunching Yale economics graduate who he hires as the A’s assistant general manager. Despite opposition from everyone, they defy conventional wisdom and challenge the traditional sabermetric system of how a player’s value is assessed. Ultimately, Beane and Brand change the way the game is played after leading the A’s to win an unprecedented 20 consecutive games, setting the American League record.
