Jamie Campbell Bower is wowing fans at theaters where “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” is currently playing. I had the chance to talk to the British star while in Los Angeles covering the premiere. Here’s what he had to say.
We know not eating cookies was hard for Jamie Campbell Bower when playing Jace Wayland, but what was his biggest challenge acting wise?
“I’m a very self critical. The first day was really tough.”
Yes, Harald Zwart confirmed that Jamie came up with the line “have a little faith,” but what inspired Jamie?
“Monster energy drink and shooting at 4am in the morning,” Jamie joked. “I thought it would be crazy and everybody loves it, maybe it’s the things you think suck that don’t.”
On his favorite line
“I didn’t need to. He did it to make me stronger.” From the greenhouse when he’s talking to Clary about his father.
On his experiences during the mall tour
“It’s shocking. I find it bazaar that anyone would want to see anything I’ve done. It’s emotional to connect with people and thank them. They are why I’m here. I respect that.”
On scenes fans will love
“Greenhouse, hotel du mort, the portal blowing up.”
On filming the “greenhouse” scene
“It’s never going to be romantic with a boom swinging around your face with 400 people but it’s an incredibly important moment for Jace. I made him dark so when he opened up it was a big moment. Otherwise people would leave hating that guy. It was a scary, awkward scene to film.”
On stunts and weapons
“I’ve become proficient at swinging a sword for “Camelot” and now I know krav mega. I did all the stunts except for when Madame Dorothea throws me against a wall.”
On how the soundtrack relates to Jace and the movie
“I think Demi’s song best represents the movie. AFI track is dope. Colbie’s song may be Jace’s vulnerable side coming through.”
On applying the runes
“It took 3 ½ hours to apply the runes. The hardest part was covering my real tattoos. First they had to paint it red and then add in color to bring my skin back to a normal skin tone.”
On what to expect from Jace in “City of Ashes”
“I haven’t read the script yet and don’t want to until we are closer to getting there but that’s a very good question. Jace can handle his relationship with Clary two ways. 1. Hide and be more sarcastic. 2. Be at peace with inner turmoil.”
"The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" is now in theaters and playing on IMAX.
