On Friday, October 18 TVLine reported that actor James Van Der Beek will be returning for the ninth season of "How I Met Your Mother," reprising the role of Robin Scherbatsky's loser ex-boyfriend. The actor tweeted a photo of the episode script for "Bedtime Stories," which might be the only episode he appears in.
Van Der Beek was introduced to on the series when Robin Scherbatsky's past as teen pop singer Robin Sparkles in Canada was revealed to Ted, Lily, Marshall and Barney. He played a character called Simon Tremblay, who was a teen heartthrob and the winner of Mr. Teen Winnipeg which landed him a spot in a Robin Sparkles music video.
Robin describes Simon as her first love even though the only dated for a week and a half. Simon meets the group when he is in New York for a few days and calls Robin. Simon turns out the be a small time musician and overall loser in life, which Robin can't see because she is blinded by her crush on him.
Van Der Beek is the latest guest star set to return for the ninth and final season of "How I Met Your Mother," along with "Breaking Bad" star Bryan Cranston. It's possible Simon will appear in flashbacks related to Robin Sparkles but there is a chance he could be invited or involved with Barney and Robin's wedding.
The show airs Monday nights at 8 p.m. on CBS. Tune in to see how Ted, Robin, Lily, Marshall and Barney deal with seeing their past come back and telling a final set of stories. With so many guest stars returning, it would not be a big surprise to see Robin Sparkles back as well.
