The Academy of American Poets is holding their annual James Laughlin Award writing contest.
The James Laughlin Award is given in recognition of a second book of poetry. It is the only second-book award for poetry in the U.S.
Manuscripts are only accepted that are under contract with a publisher. The winner receives $5000 cash and the Academy will purchase copies of the winner’s book to distribute to its members.
There is no fee to enter. Deadline is May 15, 2010. Winners will be announced in August.

The Writer’s Loft: Helmed by the famed Jerry Cleaver, author of Immediate Fiction and Professor of Professional Fiction at Northwestern University.
StoryStudio Chicago: StoryStudio’s mission is to “foster confidence and creativity in writing and storytelling through teaching, discussion, performance and community building. Writers and performers of all levels—from beginners to professionals—are invited to participate.”
Neighborhood Writing Alliance: The Neighborhood Writing Alliance holds several weekly writing workshops in neighborhoods across the city. Registration is free.
NewTown Writers: NewTown is a gay and lesbian writers’ group with regular workshops every two weeks. Registration is free.
TheUndeniables.org is an online critique group for those with restricted schedules who may not have the time to participate in a conventional classroom workshop. Registration is free. Wordpress account required.
