Moultrie News (East Cooper’s Weekly Community Newspaper Since 1964) announced on 29 March 2014 that James Island County Park will host the East Coast Paddlesports and Outdoor Festival.
“Love the outdoors? Mark your calendar for a full-blown celebration of Lowcountry outdoor activities on Friday, April 11 through Sunday, April 13.”
Formally known as the “paddler’s paradise” the festival now includes a variety of family activities, musical entertainment and numerous outdoor sports.
“In addition to the annual showcase of paddle sports enthusiasts, vendors and classes, the event has become a broad-ranging festival that now offers a multitude of outdoor sports plus live music, exciting demos and competitions, and food and beverages.”
The first major event of the evening is a live concert by Sol Driven Train. They take the stage Friday 7 p.m.
Sol Driven Train is a versatile 5-piece band, from Charleston, South Carolina that has played together for over a dozen years
“Combining rich varieties of American pop and folk music into their own port-town sound, Sol Driven Train has carved out a unique musical identity within the burgeoning roots music scene.”
The members include Ward Buckheister on guitar, trombone, and vocals; Rusty Cole on bass and vocals; Wes Powers on drums; Russell Clarke on saxophones and vocals; Joel Timmons on guitar and vocals
“Through hard work and a commitment to live performance, the band’s reputation and collective musical ability has grown with every season. Named 2011’s “Rock Band of the Year” by the Charleston City Paper, and “On the Verge” by Relix Magazine in January 2012, Sol Driven Train is an independent band breaking into the national spotlight.”
Sol Driven Train’s latest CD is Underdog
“Bring chairs or a blanket and settle in for great music, with plenty of food and beverages for sale. Admission is $10, and concert-goers will receive a discount on the festival’s “Try It” pass for Saturday or Sunday.”
Saturday evening at 6pm, Flatt City, will perform their special blend of traditional and modern music. Flatt City is a five-piece bluegrass band from Charleston, South Carolina and over the years they have taken a special delight in developing a style of music that is distinctly their own.
“We take pride in producing our own special blend of bluegrass with driving instrumentals and strong vocal harmonies. We've developed our sound from both traditional and modern sources and strive to continue the bluegrass tradition of "taking something old and making it new again."
Throughout the weekend “The East Coast Paddlesports & Outdoor Festival showcases something for every outdoor enthusiast: kayaking, canoeing, stand up paddleboarding, slack lining, archery, disc golf, mountain biking, climbing, Leave No Trace ethics, adaptive programs tailored to individuals with disabilities, and more!”
