Jack's (Daniel Lissing) former fiance and longtime friend, Rosemary, wants to reunite with the handsome Mountie. Rosemary is a talented and personable woman, but Jack has fallen for ladylike schoolteacher Elizabeth (Erin Krakow). Jack has learned that Elizabeth has been offered an attractive teaching position back East and is just as confused about her intentions as she is about his intentions.
Sparks also fly between kindly widow Abigail (Lori Loughlin) and the dashing new Mountie in town, Bill Avery (Jack Wagner), who is in Coal Valley to investigate the mine explosion. Abigail has come up against mine manager Gowen (Martin Cummins), who seems to have neglected safety in favor of profits, causing the deadly mine explosion that killed many of the miners, including Abigail's beloved husband and son.
