Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk has electrified the collectible car market by purchasing the white Lotus Esprit (aka the submarine car) driven by James Bond in the 1977 movie "The Spy Who Loved Me.” In the film, Bond, played by Roger Moore, drove the Lotus off a pier, and as it sank into the sea, he pulled a lever converting it into a mini-submarine.
Although the car was just a prop, the Los Angeles billionaire purchased the car body at an auction in September for $989,000, and says he is now planning to convert it into a real car with a Tesla electric powerplant.
The car, which had “vanished” for years was discovered in a storage unit by a Long Island contractor back in 1989 after he bought the the unit for a mere $100. The car was later authenticated several times before being auctioned off last month.
Although the car commanded a high price, it is nowhere near the $4.1 million paid for the Aston Martin D85 that was driven by Sean Connery in the James Bond film, when it was sold by (Jerry Lee, president/owner of WBEB Radio in Philadelphia, PA to an unnamed American businessman on June 1, 2010.
