Is Jameis Winston the next Peyton Manning? If you listen to the star Florida State quarterback, that’s exactly who he aspires to become in the next decade. In fact, Jameis Winston has already accomplished things that Peyton Manning never could on the college level. In his first season as the Seminoles’ starter, Winston won a national title and the Heisman Trophy as a red shirt freshman.
However, this is only the beginning for Jameis Winston. He has a lot of growing to do in the next couple of years. Winston was one of 40 college quarterbacks to work the Manning Passing Academy, and according to NFL.com, he’s the only QB to possess a championship and a Heisman trophy.
During a session with reporters, Winston stated, “I’m an observer.” “I’m really trying to see how he carries himself because I want to be the guy 10-15 years from now that’s viewed like a Peyton Manning.”
Although he’s already won big, Winston can elevate his level of play in 2014. It will be hard to duplicate the same stats as freshman year, so it’s not likely to see Winston win consecutive Heisman Trophies. Still, Florida State will be one of the favorites to be one of the final four teams standing in the inaugural college football playoffs.
If Winston is able to win back to back years, it’s highly likely that he will enter the NFL Draft with two years of eligibility left. Peyton Manning played all four years at Tennessee, before getting drafted by the Indianapolis Colts.
That’s a lot of post high school starts under his belt before taking on NFL competition. The most amount of starts Winston can rack up before jumping to the NFL would be 29. That’s a lot of games for two years of starting, but he will be a seasoned vet if he came back for a third season.
According to NFL.com, the best thing that Winston has going for him is the knowledge of the game. Head coach Jimbo Fisher stated, “When we have a conversation, I can say something to him and he sees the whole picture in his mind just like I do.” With that type of acumen, it’s hard to see Winston in a Florida State uniform beyond 2014.
During Winston’s freshman season, he threw for 4057 yards and 40 touchdowns, while accounting for 10 interceptions. In the Seminoles’ system, it’s truly hard to get better than that.
Florida State kicks off the season against a tough foe. They face off with Oklahoma State in what can turn into an early season classic on August 30.
