JaMarcus Russell rumors have the New York Jets interested in possibly signing the maligned quarterback. Russell has been one of the biggest busts in NFL history after coming out of LSU with a lot of flash and getting drafted first overall by the Oakland Raiders. According to a report on Tuesday (Jan. 29), the Jets did actually express interest in signing Russell recently.
It would be very premature to say that Russell is close to signing with the Jets, especially when the talks are being defined as "very exploratory." With the quarterback chaos in New York, though, it almost seems like anything is possible. Last season, the Jets traded for Tim Tebow from the Denver Broncos, despite having given Mark Sanchez a nice contract. With Sanchez crumbling during the 2012 NFL season, it has opened the door for someone new to take the job.
It's surprising that these JaMarcus Russell rumors have created such buzz, especially since he was just 7-18 as a starter with the Oakland Raiders. It almost looks like a way for the Jets to make headlines again during the offseason, because it seems like a really bad move for the team to sign someone as polarizing as Russell. Still, it never hurts for a franchise to look into a free agent quarterback just in case other teams have missed something he has to offer.
New York Jets fans shouldn't get too nervous, because it doesn't look like a Russell signing is imminent.
