The Bakersfield Jam (13-13) led at halftime by 13 points (65-52), but saw that lead turn into a four point deficit (85-81) at the end of the third quarter, as the Reno Bighorns (15-13) outscored the Jam by 17 points in the period, and used that turn of momentum to come out with a 106-103 win over the Jam in Reno, Nevada. Bakersfield has now lost three straight games for the first time this season.
The Jam fought back to tie the game three different times in the fourth quarter. The last tie of 91-91 came with 7:55 left on the game clock, but then a 13-4 run by Reno put the Bighorns up by nine (104-95) with only 4:35 left in the game. Bakersfield still managed an 8-2 run of their own, but an Osiris Eldridge three-pointer with 1.9 seconds left missed the mark as time expired.
The 17 point swing in the third period proved to be too much to overcome, and it was a deciding factor in defeat. The team stats across the board for both sides were fairly even balanced, but the Reno backcourt duo of Blake Ahearn (35) and Andre Emmett (19) accounted for 54 of their total of 106 points. Reno also placed three others in double figure scoring, as Bobby Simmons had 14, Zach Graham 14, and Eric Devendorf added 11 off the bench.
The Jam were paced by Jeremy Wise with 23 points and a team-high nine assists, and was followed by Derrick Byars with 17, and a team-high eight rebounds, Renaldo Major 15, and Juan Pattillo 12. The two teams will play again on Monday, February 6 at the Reno Events Center.
