Five players scored in double-figures, led by Mac Koshwal with 21 points and 10 rebounds, and the Bakersfield Jam held on for a hard-fought 104-100 victory over the visiting Los Angeles D-Fenders Friday night. Brian Butch also had a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Atlanta Hawks assignee John Jenkins chipped in with 20 points on 6-11 shooting.
Bakersfield out-rebounded Los Angeles by a 54-39 margin, and held them to only 40.2% shooting from the field. The widest disparity between the two clubs came in the form of the Jams 56-32 points in the paint dominance. Although the Jam shot only 43.9% from the field, they made 28-54 in the paint.
The D-Fefenders were led by Los Angeles Lakers assignee Ryan Kelly, who scored 21 points and had a game-high three blocked shots to go with seven rebounds. Los Angeles did have six players score in double figures to share the wealth, but did not shoot the ball well. The D-Fenders had a late run to close the gap to two points (102-100) after trailing by 14 points earlier in the final quarter. But with 3.4 seconds left, Billy Baptist grabbed a rebound off a Jamario Moon missed jumper that would have tied the score. He was then fouled intentionally with 2.1 seconds remaining, and made both foul shots to secure the victory.
The same two teams will face off again Saturday night in Los Angeles. With the win, the Jam improve to 2-4 while Los Angeles falls to 1-3.
