According to the Hockey Canada website, Jake Virtanen of the Calgary Hitmen played an instrumental role in Team Pacific's 5-4 win over Team Finland Tuesday at the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge in Victoriaville, Quebec.
Virtanen scored twice, scored in the shootout and was named the game's most valuable player to improve Team Pacific's record to 2-1.
On Saturday, Team Pacific defeated Team Russia 8-7 before losing 6-3 to Sweden on Monday.
In Team Pacific's win over Russia, it was a great performance by players with Calgary-based connections. Calgary native Brycen Martin of the Swift Current Broncos had four assists, Calgary native Tanner MacMaster of the Camrose Kodiaks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League and Calgary native Brayden Point of the Moose Jaw Warriors each scored a goal and an assist, while Virtanen and Calgary native Reid Duke of the Lethbridge Hurricanes each scored a goal in the 15 goal game in Drummondville.
Last night in Victoriaville, Point scored the game winning goal in the shootout, Calgary native Ryan Graham of the Saskatoon Blades and Duke each scored and Josh Thrower of the Calgary Hitmen picked up an assist.
Team Pacific (made up of players from Alberta and British Columbia) will next play Team West (made up of players from Saskatchewan and Manitoba) tonight at 5:30 p.m. in Victoriaville, Quebec.
