Michael Shannon, Nicholas Hoult, Elle Fanning and Kodi Smit McPhee will star in Jake Paltrow's Futuristic thriller "Young Ones" which started principal photography on Feb. 1 in South Africa through Spier Films.
Subotica's Tristan Orpen Lynch and Spier Films' Michael Auret are producing the film written and directed by Jake Paltrow and Executive Produced by Peter Garde, Marina Fuentes Arredonda, QuickFire's James Atherton and Jan Pace, and Brian O'Shea.
Set in a near future when water has become the most precious and fastest dwindling resource on the planet, "Young Ones" follows the story of a 14 year-old boy who uses his wits to protect his family and survive in a violent and unforgiving world.
Paltrow has not directed a feature film since 2007’s dream lover comedy "The Good Night," which starred older sister Gwyneth.
"This is an amazing smart and visceral maverick film. Jake has created a powerful landscape both physically and emotionally," said Lynch, producer and CEO of Subotica. "It reaches out on many levels to a wide audience but is distinctive enough to be an absolute original classic."
The film has been pre-sold to Ascot Elite (Germany), Lusomundo (Portugal), Polar Star (Latin America), Front Row (Middle East), and Penny Black (Airlines).
6 Sales and The Exchange are handling International Sales. UTA is handling North America.
Michael Auret, Producer and CEO of Spier Films, whose "Laula Fourie" is in competition at this year's Berlinale, said: "Jake's engaging tale of hope and courage in a neo-realistic dystopia will have universal appeal."
Cinematographer Giles Nuttgens (Midnight's Children, Water), Production Designer Sharon Lomofsky (Very Good Girls, Robot and Frank), and Costumer Designer Diana Cilliers (District 9, Chronicle) join the production in the desert locations of the Northern Cape.
Brian O'Shea of The Exchange said: "I feel the Young Ones is both intelligent and commercial with strong characters set in a very timely and exciting story. Exactly what the market place is looking for".
