Jake Dalton doubles down as men's NCAA Championships conclude

American Cup bronze medalist Jake Dalton was the big winner during event finals at the NCAA men's gymnastics championships, which concluded Saturday night at Ohio State.

Dalton won vault and floor exercise, depriving senior teammate and Nissen-Emery award winner Steven Legendre a record-breaking seventh NCAA title. Legendre had amassed six in his college career at Oklahoma, tying Jonathan Horton for the most NCAA titles ever won by a male gymnast.

NCAA pommel kings Daniel Ribeiro (Illinois) and Alex Naddour (Oklahoma) shared the title on their best event, and Ohio State's Brandon Wynn successfully defended his NCAA championship on still rings.

All-around runner up Tyler Mizoguchi of Illinois won his first NCAA title on parallel bars, and Stanford's Alex Buscaglia won high bar.

Dalton was the busiest gymnast at the meet, qualifying for five of the six event finals. In addition to the titles on floor and vault, he won silver on parallel bars, and finished fourth on high bar.

All-around champion Sam Mikulak of Michigan finished third on floor, fourth on parallel bars and seventh on vault. Michigan's Ian Makowske, who debuted a new skill on high bar earlier this season (Tak half with extra half twist to mixed grip), landed in second place after a hit routine.

In what might be their last meet as an athletic department sanctioned sport, five Cal gymnasts -- Bryan del Castillo, Glen Ishino, Kyle Bunthuwong, Christian Monteclaro and Steven Lacombe qualified for event finals spanning every event except floor. Monteclaro earned a silver medal on vault, Bunthuwong bronze on high bar.
