Jaden Smith (who is 15) is getting an avalanche of public criticism for his Twitter rant on Sept. 16, 2013, in which he said that the world would be better off if everyone dropped out of school. As a result of his rant, people have been questioning how his parents — Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith — have been raising him.
Jaden said in his Twitter rant that was formatted like headlines: "People Use To Ask Me What Do You Wanna Be When You Get Older And I Would Say What A Stupid Question The Real Question Is What Am I Right Now. All The Rules In This World Were Made By Someone No Smarter Than You. So Make Your Own. School Is The Tool To Brainwash The Youth. Education Is Rebellion. If Newborn Babies Could Speak They Would Be The Most Intelligent Beings On Planet Earth. If Everybody In The World Dropped Out Of School We Would Have A Much More Intelligent Society . . . Everybody Get Off Your Phones And Go Do What You Actually Wanna Do."
Jada Pinkett Smith responded to the criticism by posting this statement on her Facebook page: "We continually forget that life is about discovering ourselves and our purpose. We spend so much time criticising one another for the decisions or inevitable pitfalls along the way that we forget that making mistakes, falling, failing and getting up again is exactly what life is about. Instead we try to use criticism as a way to pretend that we don’t fall, we don’t make mistakes or struggle, we pretend we have it ALL together, when we don’t. None of us have it all together.
"At some point I hope we all get to what’s real and surrender to the fact that we are all in the same boat, discovering and trying to figure out this thing called life so we might as well support each other along the way. Just remember, you’re good, no matter what anyone else says. You are right where you need to be today. Keep living. The answers will come and be patient with yourself and others while we all…discover."
Jaden owes almost his entire movie career to his parents, especially his father. Jaden and Will co-starred in 2006's "The Pursuit of Happyness," which was Jaden's first movie. Will was one of the producers of "The Pursuit of Happyness," which earned Will an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Jaden then had a supporting role in the critically panned 2008 remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still."
Will and Jada produced Jaden's next two movies: the 2010 blockbuster "The Karate Kid" (a remake of the 1984 film of the same title) and 2013's "After Earth," a sci-fi flick. Will also co-starred in "After Earth," which was a big flop with critics and movie audiences. Most of the critics blamed the movie's failure on director M. Night Shyamalan and Jaden Smith, since critics said "After Earth" was ruined by the director's dull pacing and Jaden's terrible acting.
Jaden has also gotten some public criticism for dating 16-year-old Kylie Jenner (one of Kim Kardashian's half-sisters) because she comes from the controversial Kardashian/Jenner family.
Jaden has a 12-year-old sister named Willow (who is a singer/actress) and a 21-year-old half-brother named Trey, from Will's first marriage to ex-wife Sheree Zampino.
Jaden's Twitter rant has caused many people to question the parenting skills of Will (who is 44) and Jada (who is 41). The couple has been married since 1997.
Will recently told Haute Living magazine: "I think that, specifically in African-American households, the idea coming out of slavery, there's a concept of your children being property and that was a major part that Jada and I realized with our kids. We respect our children the way we would respect any other person. Things like cleaning up their room. You would never tell a full-grown adult to clean their room, so we don't tell our kids to clean their rooms."
Here's a sampling of reactions on the Internet to Jaden Smith's Twitter rant:
"Yep, no rules.....great idea.....NOT! This little nit wit is so full of himself that he feels he has nothing to learn and that idea is sadly being fostered by his parents. AND, he doesn't have to do any chores around the house because I'm betting they have many maids to take care of his needs. Wonder if he looks at his maids as slaves???? Sickening."
"Another proud moment for his mom/dad. What joke somebody needs to be the hero here, and start being a parent to this child before it is way to late."
"What a pompous brat!"
"The entire family is self righteous, ignorant, pampered, arrogant..STUPID Hollywood TRASH. Any 'decent' opinion I had left of Will Smith went down the toilet with the statement of 'We respect our children the way we would respect any other person. Things like cleaning up their room. You would never tell a full-grown adult to clean their room, so we don't tell our kids to clean their rooms.' They are NOT 'adults' you IDIOT!!! Cleaning their rooms is for showing Responsibility, Respect for their and your's living environment, oh wait a minute.....of course they do NOT have to 'clean their rooms'...they have a Fri**en MAID TO DO IT FOR THEM!!! I actually feel SORRY for those kids. AWFUL PARENTS!!!!"
"Of Course he would never tell his son to clean his room. That would be Slavery. So he just orders the maid to."
"Is this kid serious? And to think, there are children out there that actually look up to this punk and his sister. Also, Why Does He Capitalize Every Word?"
"Oh my goodness. Will and Jada must be really embarrassed. What a dumb kid. LMAO!"
"Oh boy. will and jada time to send him to boarding school. looks like the jenners have made their way into his head."
"How's all that working out for you Mr. Smith. Your son can't even provide an intelligent sentence. I think you need to question your parenting processes and maybe you can salvage your son into someone who is likely smart, but is able to communicate without sounding like they are learning disabled."
From The Huffington Post:
"Good gracious, what's next? He believes he can fly and touch the sky, and make marshmellows from clouds? Head exploding from a teenager's 'wisdom' in 5...4...3...2...1."
"Next time Jaden gets sick, please send him a doctor who never went to school."
"Money is the tool that brainwashes inexperienced youth. Without his daddy's money, he wouldn't be sitting on top of the world thumbing his nose at it. Sorry, but nobody will ever take Jaden seriously. He doesn't earn it on his own."
"Jaden doesn't need school. His parents have enough money to carry him and his future offspring. But if there's any kids out there who are listening to him and taking him seriously, and who's parents DON"T have the resources his parents have, they're in trouble."
"Makes you wonder how much Mom and Dad have instilled within him the value of an education??????"
"Oh, good . . .another of today's famous youth showing their ignorance and trying to mask it as intelligence. Such an outstanding role model. . ."
"Obviously, he'd slam school, because he's born into money. The real test is how he'll cope if one day he looses it all and ma and pa isn't with him anymore."
"Dear Will and Jada Smith. Please don't spend all your wealth because this kid is going to need some of it to survive. He is going nowhere fast."
