A question was posed by, Elise Sole of Shine Staff, “If you were in a celebrity marriage, would you allow your husband to cheat?” The question was raised this past Thursday, after hearing Jada Pinkett Smith’s response during an interview with HuffPost Live, regarding what most people view as her “open marriage” with actor/husband, Will Smith.
“I’ve always told Will, you can do whatever you want as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and be okay, said Mrs. Smith. “Because at the end of the day, Will is his own man. I’m here as his partner, but he is his own man. He has to decide who he wants to be and that’s not for me to do for him. Or vice versa.”
In 2008, Will Smith stated in his interview with the British magazine Now, “Our perspective is, you don’t avoid what’s natural and you’re going to be attracted to people. If it came down to it, then one would say to the other; Look, I need to have sex with somebody. Now I’m not going to do it if you don’t approve of it.”
Marriage has always been a delicate combination of love and happiness, commitment, sacrifice and work; and just because something “feels” right doesn’t make it right.
Hollywood seems to have a way of rewriting a lot of things, including what they are now calling the “new trend” towards marriage, making it appear that marriage is somehow “different” if you are a celebrity, but it isn’t; and thankfully there are a lot more happily married celebrity couples who are monogamous.
Marriage, for most of us, is considered a covenant, a “union sanctified by God,” and as we read in scripture, Ecclesiastes 5:5, “It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.”
