Jacoby Brissett will sign a letter of intent with the Florida Gators on Monday despite his mother’s preference that he attend the University of Miami. Brissett will go to Florida as a quarterback and also mentioned he may play some college basketball for Florida and head coach Billy Donovan.
“He [Donovan] said it’s primarily my decision. Whatever I feel I should do, I can do,” Brissett said in an interview during the Dwyer basketball game on Friday night. “Whatever I put my mind to, I can accomplish.”
Dwyer’s Jacoby Brissett was the nation’s top unsigned quarterback after Signing Day 2011 came and went. His mom Lisa was hoping he would chose Miami and said she would continue to try to convince him to change his mind until he finally signs the letter of intent.
"It came down to UM and Florida. I just had to follow my heart, and my heart lies in Florida," Brissett said.
His mother said she was very disappointed in his decision. Because Brissett is not 21, a parent or legal guardian also has to sign the letter of intent. Brissett has already signed it but his mother is waiting until Monday when it is to be faxed, hoping to convince him to change his mind.
"I can't please everybody," Brissett said. "I'm hurt that I hurt my mom, as you can see I was crying with her before the game. She means the world to me."
Brissett, who quarterbacked Dwyer to its first ever state championship as a junior, threw for 2,743 yards and 32 touchdowns as a senior. He joins Jeff Driskel, the nation’s top rated passer in the 2011 Florida Gators recruiting class. Despite the competition from Driskel, Brissett said he will not change positions.
“He’s just got to show he’s better than me,” Brissett said of Driskel. “I’m a quarterback. He’s got to prove to me every day, every year, that he earned that starting spot.”
Brissett, who plays on Dwyer's basketball team, also has expressed interest in playing college basketball, which might be difficult given the demands of the UF football program.
