Jacksonville visitors guide: The Florida Theatre

Florida Theatre Downtown Jacksonville Florida Real Estate

The Historic 80 year old Florida Theatre in Downtown Jacksonville

For more than 80 years, guests have been enjoying fine entertainment in one of the most historic theatres in the area, the Florida Theatre. It is one of only four 1920’s fantasy architecture movie palaces remaining in the state of Florida. The lavish décor and unmatched architecture highlights the era of grand history in downtown Jacksonville. Designed in 1927 by R.E. Hall of New York, the movie theatre was a downtown showpiece boasting architecture from the Mediterranean Revival which was prominent in the building boom of the 1920’s. The architectural show piece of the movie palace includes an ornate proscenium arch that stands six stories high in the near 2,000 seat auditorium.

One of the most memorable events to occur at the Florida Theatre took place in 1956 when Elvis Presley held one of his first indoor concert appearances. Today, the Florida Theatre plays host to more than 200 various annual events which includes 100 days dedicated to local non-profit benefits. The theatre hosts the Theatreworks, Jacksonville Film Festival, the Florida Balet, and a multitude of special events every year. The Florida Theatre is a historic architectural icon that should be enjoyed on every trip to downtown Jacksonville.
