The recession has not only caused the highest unemployment rate in over 25 years, it has now brought a Jacksonville icon to its knees. The longest running dinner theatre in the entire nation was forced to close its doors for the first time since 1967. The famous Alhambra Dinner Theatre located on Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville has announced that it has ceased operations. As of August 31, 2009, the Alhambra has shut its doors. According to Tod Booth Productions, the management company of the theatre, economic conditions over the past year have severely affected theatre attendance and the Alhambra no longer has the funds to continue operations. Residents and visitors alike will miss the laughs and good times that have been enjoyed at the historic theatre over the years.
Musicals such as The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz were annual fan favorites at the theatre. Over the impressive life span of the Alhambra, many notable performers have graced the stage including the great Mickey Rooney. Christmas in Jacksonville will not be the same without the famous “Bah-humbug” of Tony Triano as Mr. Scrooge. Thanks to the staff, management, and performers of the Alhambra Dinner Theatre for 41 years of great food and entertainment. The good times at the Alhambra will always hold a cherished place in the heart of theatre lovers in Jacksonville.

I would like to thank the author of this piece for acknowledging the staff of the Alhambra as well as the various casts. Performers may come and go, but some of the staff have been there for 15, 20 and for some, 25 years. They may not have received applause after their work was done, but they are apprecated for sticking with the theatre thru thick and thin.
