Jacksonville VisionWalk participants reached a huge milestone in their fundraising journey on Tuesday by reaching $500,000 raised since the inaugural Jacksonville VisionWalk in 2009.

Past Jacksonville Chapter President of the Foundation Fighting Blindness Suzi Ford issued a challenge to the 2014 Jacksonville VisionWalk participants to surpass the cumulative $500,000 mark this year. Jacksonville VisionWalkers raised $423,349 since the inaugural VisionWalk in 2009, meaning they had to raise at least $76,651 by the April 26 Walk Day, and on Tuesday they reached that goal.

There's still some work left to do for these volunteers, however; the fundraising goal for the 2014 Jacksonville VisionWalk is $100,000, and the thermometer currently reads $80,244.15.

VisionWalk is the national signature fundraising event for the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Since its inception in 2006, tens of thousands have participated in events across the country to raise more than $30 million for blindness research, according to the VisionWalk website.
