The non-profit group First Coast No More Homeless Pets in Jacksonville, Fla. set a new 2-day placement record and is still going strong on the final day of their "Mega Pet Adoption Event" at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds this weekend. The group's Facebook page is full of smiling faces showing newly-adopted pets with their forever families.
The group hosts the event as part of its goal to make theirs a no-kill community. Scheduled to end at 6:00pm EST on Sunday, July 20, this event has made giant strides toward solving the homeless pet problem. To help increase adoptions, the adoption fee for the event is only $25 and includes spaying and neutering, microchips, vaccines and city licenses. Service members may adopt for free with a valid military ID.
Sponsored in part by PetSmart Charities, this event sets an exciting precedent for other animal advocacy groups dealing with overcrowded rescue facilities. What makes an event like this such a success?
- Affordable adoption fees. Low adoption fees are cost-prohibitive as a long-term policy, but for an isolated event they can provide a budget-friendly solution for families whose hearts are bigger than their bank accounts.
- Expedited application and background screening. This type of adoption event is staffed with personnel to process immediate, onsite applications and pre-screening for prospective adopters.
- Centralized pet resources. Adoptable pets are located alongside all the pet resources needed for successful transitions to forever families. Pets go home already spayed/neutered, microchipped, licensed and vaccinated. This is truly a one-stop-shop for finding and rescuing a forever friend.
