This is the time of the year when spring breakers flock to well known destinations such as Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and Daytona. For those travelers who are looking for a relaxing beach getaway from all the college students then Jacksonville Beach is the place to be.
The beaches of Jacksonville, from Neptune to St. Augustine are still pretty well unknown, a hidden jewel of Florida. The beaches are wide, clean and quiet.
This is a great place to walk along the beach looking for sea shells. There are many nature trails in the Jacksonville beach area to explore as well as kayaking, canoeing and fishing.
If you are interested in history then St. Augustine is only a short scenic drive south and Amelia Island is just north of Jacksonville Beach. There are many art galleries in the area as well as the Beaches Museum.
For the kids there is Adventure Landing, a great little park full of video games, mini golf, go-karts, and water slides. The Jacksonville Zoological Gardens with their new penguin exhibit is worth the drive away from the beach. The Museum of Science and History with their planetarium is always fascinating and sure to get the kids excited. Also, check the NASA website to see when the next shuttle launch will be. Cape Canaveral is only a short 2 hour drive south or on a clear day or night you will be able to see the shuttle streak across the sky over the ocean from Jacksonville Beach.
For the adults there are some great restaurants in the area, relax on the beach, fish off the pier, go golfing at one of the many golf courses in the area, or do the Anheuser-Busch Tour.
With the warmer weather comes many seafood festivals on the weekends. These festivals have great food, arts and crafts, music, and activities for children. Eat hotdogs and drink a cold coke with the whole family while taking in a Suns game.
Jacksonville has much to offer families that are looking for a great escape for the week or just a weekend. So, what are you waiting for. Whether you are break out the board shorts for some surfing, enjoying the sights and history, or taking in a round of golf (mini or otherwise) there is a never ending supply of fun in Jacksonville.
