Tomorrow is the first of August. It’s amazing how time flies when you’re having fun but most especially during the summer months, right? Never fear, my friends – there is no shortage of fabulous events scheduled throughout the summer and beyond. You know I’ll keep you posted!

The 2014 International Surf Festival got underway yesterday, Wednesday, July 30 and will run through Sunday, August 3. The festival kicked off with the Charlie Saikley Volleyball Tournament (better known as 6-man!) on Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Manhattan Beach pier and continues today. The Los Angeles County Lifeguard Medal of Valor Dinner is scheduled for tonight, Thursday, July 31 at 6 p.m. at the Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach. Tickets may be purchased at the door if not sold out. On Friday August 1, the LA County Lifeguard Championships take place at the Hermosa Beach Pier beginning at 7 p.m. Events include U.S. Coast Guard Helicopter and L.A. County Lifeguard rescue demonstrations, run relays and other lifeguard competitions. Saturday and Sunday will be packed with events all day long. The fun-filled weekend includes surfing championships, the Dick Fitzgerald two-mile beach run, sand soccer, the Velzy-Stevens Pier to Pier Paddleboard Championship, sand castle contest, beach volleyball and several other activities. The International Surf Festival is presented by, the Chambers of Commerce and the Cities of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Department of Beaches and Harbors. The public is invited to a Memorial Service for Louis Zamperini tonight, Thursday, July 31 at Torrance High School’s Zamperini Stadium. The City of Torrance, in partnership with the Torrance Historical Society, Torrance Unified School District, Torrance Airport Association, Torrance High School and the Torrance High School Alumni Association, invites the community to a celebration of life in honor of Torrance hometown hero, Louis Zamperini who passed away on July 3, 2014. The memorial will begin at 6 p.m. at Torrance High School, Zamperini’s alma mater. This will be a celebration of the life with airplane flyovers, reflections from Zamperini’s family and friends and a symbolic lap around the track. It will be a true tribute to our hometown hero. The City of Redondo Beach hosts Summer Family Films under the Stars throughout the month of August. Every Friday evening during the long, hot days of August, Alta Vista Park will be transformed into an outdoor theater for screenings of family-friendly movies. Enjoy an evening in the park with family, friends and neighbors. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets and whatever you do, don’t forget the popcorn! The movies start at dusk and this Friday, August 1, features the film Marty. These screenings are very popular so you’ll want to arrive early to claim a prime viewing location. The American Honda Motor Company, in partnership with the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, presents an Evening under the Stars: The 28 Annual Gourmet Food & Wine Festival on Saturday, August 2. The gala event takes place from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the Honda Headquarters in Torrance with the proceeds benefitting Torrance Memorial Medical Center and additional selected charities. The evening features multi Grammy Award winners Tia Carrere and Daniel Ho, hula performances by Keali’i and Halau, scrumptious bites of the finest South Bay cuisine and more than 80 varietals of wine. All canines and their human companions are invited to attend a monthly Social Canine Group Hike the first Sunday of each month. These monthly group hikes were created to give all dogs and their two-legged buddies a much needed opportunity to enjoy a healthy outdoor activity in the company of other dogs and people. It’s the most fulfilling and primal activity a dog can experience. These hikes offer attendees the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors while making new friends. This FREE activity takes place the first Sunday of every month at different hiking trails throughout the South Bay. This month they’ll be hiking in the area of the Point Vicente Lighthouse. We’ve been waiting for this all summer long! LA Car Guy is proud to present the 2014 Hermosa Beach Summer Concert Series! The concerts will take place Sundays in August from 4 to 8 p.m. (with the exception of August 10 – that show starts at noon) on the south side of the Hermosa Beach Pier located at the base of Pier Plaza in Hermosa Beach. This Sunday, August 3 features Too Rude with The Untouchables and JBand. These concerts are some of the most popular events in the South Bay and the crowds number well into the thousands. Join the Beach Cities Health District for their ongoing free fitness series, Boot Camp in the Park, every Monday evening from August 4 through August 25. The weekly event will take place at Valley Park in Hermosa Beach. Get moving and de-stress with this free, public event that brings together the community, fitness and fun! Everyone is welcome to participate at your own pace. Registration starts at 6 p.m. with the hour long boot camp beginning at 6:30. All participants must sign a waiver. It’s all brought to you by Beach Cities Health District, Blue Zones Project, Center for Health & Fitness and AdventurePlex to promote health and physical activity in the community. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable, athletic clothing and bring a jacket in case of cool weather. Classes will be led by certified instructors from the Center for Health & Fitness and AdventurePlex. Ortega 120 hosts Tequila University the first Tuesday of every month from 7 to 9 p.m. Named one of the ‘Top 30 Things to Do in LA’ by Where Magazine, the event is hosted by award-winning mixologist and tequila aficionado Demi Stevens. This popular class features a different tequila company every month and students quickly discover that learning has never been so…..tasty. Attendees will receive:

The 31 annual National Night Out takes place this year on Tuesday, August 5. This unique crime and drug prevention event is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. The National Night Out campaign involves citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. This annual event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness by generating support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; strengthening neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and sending a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Residents are encouraged to organize block parties and other social events. National Night Out has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program. If you have a special talent and are ready to take the stage, this is your chance to shine! The Torrance Cultural Arts Foundation presents the inaugural South Bay’s Got Talent. The Foundation is a long-time supporter of local artists and will feature them on one stage for a night of great entertainment. Auditions will be held September 8 and 9 at the Armstrong Theater with the main performance on Saturday, September 27. All genres of talent are accepted: music, dance, acting, variety, etc. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The talent show is open to all residents of the South Bay which includes the Beach Cities (Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach), the Palos Verdes Peninsula, neighborhoods of the City of Los Angeles (Harbor City, Harbor Gateway, San Pedro and Wilmington), El Segundo and inland cities of the South Bay (Hawthorne, Inglewood, Gardena, Carson, Lawndale, Torrance and Lomita).
