Terranea Resort will host the fourth dinner in the Chef’s Cooking Series led by Executive Chef Bernard Ibarra tonight, Thursday, July 24. The dinner, themed Fire and Water, will feature dishes crafted to emphasize the best of what both the land and the sea have to offer. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception, followed by the three-course seated dinner. Chef Ibarra and his team of exceptional chefs, have put together a seasonally inspired three-course dinner, including an hors d’oeuvres cocktail hour served with wine pairings by Caymus. The dinner will benefit the Palos Verdes Land Conservancy. To highlight the theme, this month’s dinner will take place at mar’sel, Terranea’s signature restaurant. With its 180-degree ocean views and glowing fire pits, guests will enjoy the theme on every level. Tickets are $300 per person, or $699 for a 3-ticket package that can be used on the same or over multiple dinners. The Women’s Council of Realtors-South Bay Chapter presents the fourth annual Taste of Summer on Thursday, July 24 at South Coast Botanic Garden. Taste of Summer is a food, wine and craft beer festival that takes place each year in a picturesque South Bay location. The event takes place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and features tasty bites from a variety of South Bay restaurants, beer, wine, live music and silent auction. Nikau Kai Waterman Shop, Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation and the Downtown Manhattan Business Association have teamed up to present the Summer Surf Movie Series at Metlox Plaza. The second screening will be Disney/Pixar’s, Finding Nemo tonight, Thursday, July 24. Food will be available for purchase from Manhattan Beach Pizzeria, Bonaventura Gelato and popcorn and beverages from Nikau Kai staffed by the Mira Costa Surf Club. The evening also features music, activities for the kids and a raffle with items donated from downtown businesses and local surf brands. These family-friendly screenings are free and open to the public. The fun begins at 6:30 p.m. with the raffle at 7:15 and the movie at 7:30. A percentage of the proceeds from all vendor booths will go to support the Mira Costa Surf Team. Metlox Plaza is located at 13th Street and Morningside Drive in Manhattan Beach.
The City of Torrance Community Services Department and local Homeowners Associations are proud to sponsor Movies in the Park. These movie nights will take place at various parks throughout the city this summer. Everyone is welcome and admission is free. Pack up a picnic basket, blanket and lawn chairs and join friends and neighbors for an evening of family-friendly cinematic entertainment as the parks convert into outdoor movies theaters. Each event will feature a different movie beginning at dusk (around 8 p.m.) so bring a jacket, popcorn, cocoa and snacks and join in the fun! Join the Richstone Family Center for their 40 Birthday Beach Bash on Saturday, July 26 on the beach at King Harbor. Join Vanguard for Game of Skate on Sunday, July 27 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It’s been a while since Vanguard has had an event and they’re going all out. Shredders must sign up at the shop – spots are going fast, so get there ASAP! There will be games, prizes, raffles, giveaways and music streaming from NIXON. Wee Man’s Chronic Tacos will be on site, so bring some bucks for lunch. Groms 11 and under will be the first contest. The event also features SPECIAL GUESTS and MYSTERY JUDGES! You’ll see when you get there. The vanguard mini ramp/ half pipe will be open as well. If you want to skate, make sure you have a waiver on file with the shop – no exceptions – if you are under 18 it needs to be signed by your parent or guardian. The City of El Segundo Recreation & Parks Department is proud to present the 2014 Summer Concerts in the Park Series sponsored by Chevron. These free concerts take place on select Sunday evenings at Library Park located at the 600 block of Main Street in beautiful downtown El Segundo. The 2014 International Surf Festival gets underway on Wednesday, July 30 and runs through Sunday, August 3. The festival kicks off with the Charlie Saikley Volleyball Tournament (better known as 6-man!) on Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Manhattan Beach pier. The Los Angeles County Lifeguard Medal of Valor Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, July 31 at 6 p.m. at the Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach. Tickets may be purchased at the door if not sold out. On Friday August 1, the LA County Lifeguard Championships take place at the Manhattan Beach Pier beginning at 7 p.m. Events include U.S. Coast Guard Helicopter and L.A. County Lifeguard rescue demonstrations, run relays and other lifeguard competitions. Saturday and Sunday will be packed with events all day long. The fun-filled weekend includes surfing championships, the Dick Fitzgerald two-mile beach run, sand soccer, the Velzy-Stevens Pier to Pier Paddleboard Championship, sand castle contest, beach volleyball and several other activities. The International Surf Festival is presented by BEACHSPORT.org, the Chambers of Commerce and the Cities of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Department of Beaches and Harbors. The public is invited to a Memorial Service for Louis Zamperini on Thursday, July 31 at Torrance High School’s Zamperini Stadium. The City of Torrance, in partnership with the Torrance Historical Society, Torrance Unified School District, Torrance Airport Association, Torrance High School and the Torrance High School Alumni Association, invites the community to a celebration of life in honor of Torrance hometown hero, Louis Zamperini who passed away on July 3, 2014. The memorial will begin at 6 p.m. at Torrance High School, Zamperini’s alma mater. This will be a celebration of the life with airplane flyovers, reflections from Zamperini’s family and friends and a symbolic lap around the track. It will be a true tribute to our hometown hero.
