Yesterday morning, I took my first SUP lesson. For the uninitiated, SUP is an acronym for ‘stand up paddleboard’. This water activity has become incredibly popular in just the last few years and it’s been on my list of ‘things to do’ for a while now. The crew at Olympus Board Shop in Torrance set my niece and me up for a two hour lesson in King Harbor. The conditions and weather were perfect. We spent about 15 minutes at the public dock behind Ruby’s getting some instruction and then set off. We learned several basic moves - how to stop, how to make a sharp turn, how to paddle in a straight line without shifting the paddle from side to side, etc. It was a ton of fun but the best part is, you can do this at your own pace and exertion level - it can be a vigorous workout or leisurely pursuit. Either way, you’re on the water and it’s all good! Summer is in full swing and the weather is fine so be sure to get out there and take advantage of all the fabulous activities and events the South Bay has to offer!
