I hate to say it, but summer is coming to an end (the unofficial season, at least) and kids are heading back to school as early as next week! Say it isn’t so! In the meantime, there are a gazillion events taking place during the next few weeks. Let’s squeeze in as much summertime fun as possible while we can!

The City of Redondo Beach hosts Summer Family Films under the Stars throughout the month of August. Every Friday evening during the month of August, Alta Vista Park will be transformed into an outdoor theater for screenings of family-friendly movies. Enjoy an evening in the park with family, friends and neighbors. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets and whatever you do, don’t forget the popcorn! This Friday, August 8, they’ll be screening A Midsummer Night's Dream. The movie begins at dusk. These screenings are very popular so you’ll want to arrive early to claim a prime viewing location! This season, Shakespeare by the Sea presents two brand new productions staged at venues throughout the South Bay. Performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Hamlet, Prince of Denmark will take place during July and the first week in August. The performances this weekend take place in Manhattan Beach at Polliwog Park located at 1601 Manhattan Beach Boulevard: Hamlet on August 8 at 7 p.m. and A Midsummer Night’s Dream on August 9 at 7 p.m. So grab a few lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic basket and settle in for a theater production by the greatest playwright of all time. The Torrance Art Museum at the Joslyn Center (TAM) invites the public to attend MAS ATTACK 6, a one-night-only reception for new exhibitions on Saturday, August 9 from 6 to 10 p.m. presented by Artra Curatorial. The reception is free to the public and no RSVP is necessary. MAS (Mutual Appreciation Society) is a one-night-only appreciation event for artist’s artists designed to facilitate networking and friendships, to introduce art lovers to new works, and gallerists to new talent, like a giant ‘studio visit’. There are over 150 artists participating in this exhibition and they’ll gather together for an informal meet-the-artist exhibition evening, with one work per artist displayed. Join El Segundo Museum of Art for Las Amazonas, a dialogue with the women of the Getty Black Book on Saturday, August 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. Who are the women of the Getty Black Book? Come and meet them at this unique event, where Los Angeles’ leading women graffiti writers/artists will discuss their role in the graffiti art scene, culture, feminism and why girls write on walls. Featured artists include: Omega, Chalk, Petal, Blosm, Jerk, Envy, Deeva, Jeyd, Wink and more! A slide show presentation will be followed by a round table discussion and Q&A. Saint Rocke and LA Car Guy present the 2014 Hermosa Beach Summer Concert Series! The concerts take place on the south side of the Hermosa Beach Pier. This weekend, August 9 & 10, in conjunction with The Discovery Channel, they’ll be presenting FINFEST – billed as ‘the ultimate Shark Week party’. (Ironic, considering what happened at the pier a few weeks ago.) The fun starts at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday and will continue until the sun goes down. Three different bands will play both days and the festivities end with a screen-on-the-sand premiere at 8 p.m. Sunday. The City of El Segundo Recreation & Parks Department is proud to present the 2014 Summer Concerts in the Park series sponsored by Chevron. These free concerts take place on select Sunday evenings at Library Park in beautiful downtown El Segundo. Activities begin at 4 p.m. with the music starting at 4:30 and running until 6 p.m. Local food vendors will be on hand and kids can stop by the gazebo for free face painting and arts & crafts provided by Camp Cowabungo Day Camp. This Sunday, August 10 is the last concert of the season and features the Scott Whyte Band. No glass containers are permitted and please leave the pets at home. The Lunada Bay Homeowners Association presents the Summer Concert Series in Lunada Bay Park on Sunday, August 10 and this is the final show of the season. The fun gets underway at 5 p.m. so be sure to bring a picnic dinner and enjoy a wonderful evening in the park with family and friends. The event also features a raffle and prizes. USC Alumni present the inaugural TrojanFest at the South Coast Botanic Garden on Sunday, August 10. TrojanFest is a family summer celebration designed to bring together old friends and introduce new ones to the South Bay Trojan Community. The event runs from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Bring the whole family for a fun-filled day with the Trojan Marching Band, Traveler, special guests and fellow Trojans. Kids will have a blast with games and activities while fellow alumni and friends reconnect. The first 200 attendees will receive a Fight On t-shirt! Food and beverages will be available for purchase from the In-N-Out truck, Vella Mobile Woodfire Pizza, Hawaiian Shaved Ice and Absolution Brewery. Attendees may also purchase a wine tasting. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children four years and older. Children under four are free. This event is for anyone interested in what USC has to offer and a chance to meet alumni and other members of the USC family. In celebration of its fifth anniversary, Terranea Resort located on the Palos Verdes peninsula, presents the first annual Celebration of Food & Wine on Sunday, August 10. Join world-renowned sommeliers, winemakers and Terranea’s award-winning chefs as they create a special day devoted to wine tasting, fine cuisine, wine seminars, cooking demonstrations and more. The food and wine extravaganza will feature seminars and wine tastings led by renowned winemakers along with bites from Terranea chefs, a wine paired luncheon and an evening reception and dinner. The FABULOUS Michael Franks of Chez Melange is turning 64 and needs a little help from his friends! Michael feels very lucky to be here to celebrate this milestone birthday, so as a special ‘Thank You’, Chez Melange is hosting a Fundraiser for Providence Little Company of Mary on Sunday, August 10 at 6 p.m. Back in January, the staff of Providence Little Company of Mary saved Michael’s life and as a gesture for their amazing skills, Michael felt it was appropriate to pay it forward in support of Cardiovascular Services. If you have a special talent and are ready to take the stage, this is your chance to shine! The Torrance Cultural Arts Foundation presents the inaugural South Bay’s Got Talent. The Foundation is a long-time supporter of local artists and will feature them on one stage for a night of great entertainment. Auditions will be held September 8 and 9 at the Armstrong Theater with the main performance on Saturday, September 27. All genres of talent are accepted: music, dance, acting, variety, etc. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The talent show is open to all residents of the South Bay which includes the Beach Cities (Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach), the Palos Verdes Peninsula, neighborhoods of the City of Los Angeles (Harbor City, Harbor Gateway, San Pedro and Wilmington), El Segundo and inland cities of the South Bay (Hawthorne, Inglewood, Gardena, Carson, Lawndale, Torrance and Lomita). The Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce has come up with an appropriately awesome way to celebrate the end the summer – with the Backyard BBQ Opportunity Drawing! In an effort to end the season on the right note, the Chamber will provide the winner, and their guests, with everything they need for the hottest summer BBQ in the South Bay.
