Last night on 'America's Got Talent', Sarah Brightman was the professional, but Jackie Evancho was the talent.
Even though the 11-year-old didn't win the American version of the British show, she did beat out the Brit who showed to sing with her. This West End actress (she was the original lead for 'Phantom of the Opera' with Michael Crawford) didn't seem to be able to keep up with her kid counterpart as the two sang in two languages.
The song, 'Time To Stay Goodbye', was a favorite of both ladies, the little one learning from her idol long before they met.
Evancho took the lead in what would end in a duet, singing to chilling heights and rousing cheers from her audience. In between, Brightman took over, singing the runs of this ballad made famous in 1994 by Andrea Bocelli who later dueted on the heartbreaking melody with Sarah.
But last night when the little singer and the older singer were together in unison and on the same pitch, Jackie's voice outreached Sarah's, especially on the high note at the end when Evancho simply used her pure, sweet sound to stand out over her fellow musician. Outstanding.
Performing with her hero Sarah Brightman, Jackie Evancho said she was thrilled to meet this mentor on 'America's Got Talent' but she may not have realized that it was her voice that outshined the pro.
Do you agree? Take a look at the video of the performance and weigh in please.

Trollocks!
Really? You think Jackie out shined Sarah? Seriously get tested for brain Damage. It was Jackie's night and of course Sarah would not outshine her and steal the show. People were cheering for Sarah a lot more when she came on stage because of who she is what she has accomplished. Its interesting that you don't mention how Sarah could hit the low notes better than Jackie or the fact that there was no emotional connection to the song from Jackie. Jackie is good but not great. Had Jackie been in her 20's you would probably say that Sarah was better. Because you are basing everything on the girls age and not the talent and skill. Never mind how I'm sure the show added some some base and tone to the mic and some minor echo to make her sound like a 30yr old. Even when she proved to Howie that she could sing you can tell her "Live test" was not that great. Do your homework next time instead of just writing nonsense.
Whoever wrote this article is a complete idiot and obviously knows nothing about singing opera. It isn't POP you twit! Sarah was outstanding, taking nothing away from little Jackie! She was not outshone by any means! What kind of a bi*ch do you think Sarah is or would be to belt out notes louder then a 10 year old little girl and 'steal' her spotlight? It was a duet and it was Jackie's night! Sarah graciously helped her celebrate it by singing with her. If you knew anything about Sarah or her singing or her history you would feel ashamed for writing such crap.
I agree with the above. Sarah is phenomenal. Always has been and she's a pioneer with how she sings and the musical compositions she's come up with. That is why Jackie imitates her in every way, including Sarah's stage mannerisms. Jackie is great and I hope Sarah can mentor her, protect her voice and her innocence as she said last night. Opera can strain and destroy young voices, its NOT like singing POP. And it isn't how LOUD you sing the notes in opera Jane, its that you hit the high notes. Quietly if trained properly so that you don't hurt your voice. Sarah knows this, Jackie will learn this. And I agree, I don't think Sarah was trying to trounce Jackie and upstage her on her own night. It was a nice duet and people shouldn't try to make it a competition.
Agree with comments. Sarah Brightman went out of her way to fly in from Germany as a favor to her friend who works on the show - she did it without promoting any product or campaigning for herself in any way. And she sang JACKIE's arrangement of the song (very different than hers) in order to highlight Jackie.
Even more, Sarah Brightman's tone and sound were much, much more developed and clear - and she visibly pulled back her volume at one point, as a good duet partner would do.
"Reviewers" who write about things they have no knowledge of are just showing their ignorance.
To add to above - Jackie's final note was not better than Sarah's, it was different.
Since ignorance abounds in this article, I"ll explain. A child's high notes are thin and light sounding, lacking the "full" or "round" sound usually desired in classical singing.
Sarah's high note was a well trained, full note, which will sound "heavier" or deeper. This is also because Sarah's age at 52 will lower the timber of her voice. But her technique allows her to hit the note.
THE REAL POINT IS THAT JACKIE WAS THE BEST OF THE COMPETITION. THE COMPETITION WAS ALL ABOUT WHO WILL PUT ON THE BEST SHOW IN VEGAS, AND NOT ABOUT TALENT. A 10 YR OLD GIRL SINGING OPERA IN VEGAS.....BORING. IN SIN CITY...ARE U KIDDING ME. IT WAS A FIX. WHY EVEN LET KIDS IN THE TALENT SHOW IF IT'S A FIX. KWIM...
The thing I keep hearing most is how she shouldn't have won because she was too young to be in Vegas...or how a nightly show might ruin her young voice. I tend to agree with the previous comment which pointeded out why let those who are not "age appropriate" enter this type of contest....if they are going to be penalized for it in the end. I would also like to comment on the duet. Jackie's voice is different than Sarah's and if you look at Jackie's youtube performances from just 1 year ago, you can see how her voice has blossomed.... Can you imagine what it will be like in 2 to 5 more years! Let's just all remain fans and enjoy....because I believe she will surpass all of the greats and it seems as though she will have a beautiful, generous and exceptionally gracious mentor in Sarah Brightman.
I am not generally a fan of this type of music. However, I have been absolutely enthralled with little Jackie. I found her performances to be absolutely angelic (a well worn adj. but it fits). I found myself tearing up listening to her sing and, as i said, I don't go for this type of music.
To the writer of the article:
I've never heard of Sarah Brightman before this, but she was NOT "outsung." She was singing with a 10 year old with an amazing voice. Not to mention the fact the girl idolized her. I thought Brightman showed a lot of class by singing with the girl, not over her.
This little girl has gotten me to appreciate the skill, poise and talent it takes to sing this type of music. But above all, I now see it's beauty, and I thank both of them.
Sarah is a beautiful person, and a great singer! It was very gracious of her to sing with Jackie. You can tell that Jackie respects Sarah very much, and you could tell that Sarah feels the same about little Jackie! Jackie is very mature with her manners, and her singing talent. It was a incredible moment to see the two of them together! Sarah was not competing with Jackie. She sang with Jackie, and was letting Jackie have her big night. There were two Angels singing together that night! What a dream come true for all of us. Thank you!
I agree Jackie was much better, just look at each solo during the duet (if that makes any sence, there seems to be some brainlessness on this thread), you can see and hear Sarah struggle with the high note, Jackie doesn't struggle with her solo. See and hear for yourself and stop this nonsense of "oh Sarah was being nice!", you don't know that!!! There's no way you would know that, even if you are standing next to them.
Oh I must disagree with the above. Sara is a great singer but I understand had some medical issues at the time.
And yes the 10 yr DID outshine her, imagine in 10 years how she will sound if she as Sara said takes care of her voice.
Just because we Love Sara doesn't make her always the best, this time the little one did shine!
I think with this unforgetable duet with legendary Sara Brightman,Miss Evancho proved her talent is far superior to any other contestant.I would like to have seen Sarah,s reaction when the girl who held her own with her received a slap in the face from America, instead of the victory she unquestionably deserved. It was a slap in the face to Ms.Brightman as well in a "backhanded"kind of way.For the first time in my life I am ashamed of my country.
I have to believe Sarah made sure she did not over power Jackie. Everything about her appearance was pure class. With that, Sarah's voice has never been as warm as Jackie's is now. Never with soul as Jackie has loads of. Also, whoever thinks Jackie's high notes were thin just because she's young wasn't listening. The fabulous thing about Jackie is much more than technical ability or power. She has all the intangibles. Her timing is unsurpassed. Her ability to put feeling into a song is unmatched.,, and much more. She's as good as good as anyone that ever lived, and she will only get better.
r u crazy, only a professional can beat sara B. excuse me, I am a professional musicians and I know. Jackie is great for her age but she's got ways to go yet
