Jackie Chan, known for his work in movies like “Rumble in the Bronx” and “Rush Hour,” sparked a firestorm of outrage after calling the United States "the most corrupt country in the world” in a recent Chinese TV interview, Twitchy (Warning: Link contains strong language) reported Sunday.
"I didn't want to know that Jackie Chan loves communist China & slams 'the most corrupt' country in the world, the United States," tweeted The Blaze's Jason Howerton.
"F**k you Jackie Chan," another person tweeted.
"#jackiechan has made MILLIONS of dollars from #america and now he's calling us 'corrupt,'" added another Twitter user.
"He's done in my eyes," tweeted "Mark G."
An article at the Washington Post called Chan "passionately political" and described him as "a staunch defender of the Chinese Communist Party and harsh critic of anyone he sees as opposing Beijing," which now includes the United States.
"This avowed communist propagandist is the 9th wealthiest star on the Forbes China Celebrity list," Twitchy added. "Chan’s latest and last movie, Chinese Zodiac, raked in nearly $35 million in China last week, debuts in other parts of Asia later this month, and opens in the U.S. later this summer."
Twitchy observed that a number of moviegoers have said they would not support his movies.
"I'm done with anti-U.S. Jackie Chan, too. He does V8 commercials, also. That company should be notified they will lose consumers," one person tweeted.
According to the Post, Chan has sparked controversy for years, "criticizing Taiwan and Hong Kong as models of what can go wrong when you have 'too much freedom.'”
“Chinese people need to be controlled, otherwise they will do whatever they want,” he once said, defending Chinese censorship of his movies. He also called Taiwanese democracy “the biggest joke in the world,” the Post added.
