'Jack the Giant Slayer' battles the weekend box office competition and wins

After a generally slow box office start to 2013, it's no surprise that "Jack the Giant Slayer" led the box office weekend, coming in first with an estimated $28 million.

The movie, starring "X-Men: First Class" actor Nicholas Hoult, is a twist on the classic fairytale about Jack and his magical beanstalk. On Friday, the movie raked in $7.7 million, gaining a larger audience on Saturday and taking in $3.4 million from its IMAX showings.

Coming in second is Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy's comedy "Identity Thief" with a mediocre $9.71 million.

"21 and Over" was a disappointment, coming in third place at an even $9 million. The movie was written and directed by the same team who made "The Hangover".

"The Last Exorcism II" came in fourth with $8.03 million and Dwayne Johnson's "Snitch" dropped to fifth place with only $7.7 million.
