Made popular by the series of books by author Tom Clancy, agent, Jack Ryan, returns in Shadow Recruit.
Like the first novel/film Patriot Games, Ryan goes up against terrorists, not from Ireland, out for revenge, but Russia, trying to bring down the United States by crashing the economy.
In Patriot Games we meet Jack also when he’s married, but he has a daughter named Sally, and they’re pregnant again. But in Shadow Recruit, Jack (Chris Pine) is much younger with no children and employed as an office analyst…or so he believes.
Until somebody tries to assassinate him.
His wife, Cathy (Keira Knightley), is also under the impression he has a quaint office job, as a financial analyst; yet, she also has not been completely truthful about her own identity.
Chris Pine, is the first to follow in William Shatner’s footsteps in Star Trek and the fourth actor to play Jack Ryan after Alec Baldwin (Hunt for Red October), Harrison Ford (42-Jackie Robinson, Patriot Games), and Ben Affleck (The Sum of All Fears, Argo).
Unlike the other films, Shadow Recruit, written by Adam Cozad and David Koepp; directed by Kenneth Branagh, is not based on a Clancy novel. But like Hunt for Red October, Ryan is matching wits with a savvy Russian; a savvy Russian not named Captain Marko Raimus, but fascist, Viktor Cherevin.
Shadow Recruit also stars Kenneth Branagh (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets; Othello), Nonso Anozie (The Bible, Dracula), Kevin Costner (JFK, Silverado), and Deborah Rosan (Muppets Most Wanted, Fast and Furious 6).
