The annual Jack Rafter 5k was held on Saturday, July 19, 2014 in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. The race was staged by the Tinton Falls Rotary Club. This year the date was changed to the new date to avoid conflicting with other events and brought back some favorable reviews from the runners and walkers.
The race memorializes Jack Rafter the long time cross country coach.
The sky was overcast for a majority of the morning and cooler temperatures led to some fast times.
Alan Disciullo of Princeton a former protégé of Coach Rafter was the official race starter this year and provided the runners with some instructions and a nice Jack Rafter memory. Alan ran for the 1967 Red Bank Catholic County Champion team – one of Jack Rafter’s favorite wins in his long successful tenure at RBC.
The runners were greeted by the motivational sounds of Dave Domonico’s trumpet at the halfway mark providing some added fun.
Last year’s men’s winner, Alex Fowlie returned to successfully defend his title and broke under seventeen minutes in a rather close finish. Brianna Susca of Middletown and a Red Bank Catholic graduate was the overall women’s winner.
The youngest finisher was 11 year old Adam Healy in a time of 29:38. The event offered a variety of paces, a walking event that took place on the track while the 5k was running through Tinton Falls’ Cloverdale Loop. All finishers hit the tape on the track at Monmouth Regional’s football stadium.
Eileen Moon – author of the recently released book “Legendary Locals of Red Bank” was on hand and provided an autograph signing of her book. Coach Rafter was named one of the Legends of Red Bank and is noted in the book.
Once again the water station was manned by CVR in Eatontown. Following the race, awards were presented by Tinton Falls Rotary Club President Susan Goldring. Music and refreshments made this special event a success and the Rotary Club is looking forward to next year’s race as another step in growing this local event.
Results will be posted as soon as they have been finalized and the annual photo montage will be created by master audio video technician and Rotarian Travis Johnson of Lincroft.
