With the news of Jack Nicholson retiring, decided to look at 5 of his film roles. He no doubt has had the most impressive film career in Hollywood. He can be added to other great actors like Spencer Tracy, Peter O'Toole, Humphrey Bogart, and many others.
So here are 5 of his roles that are great:
Jack Torrance-"The Shining"
Nicholson's role in "The Shining," was a memorable creepy one. To the start you could sense their was something wrong with him and that was correct. The creepy "Here's Johnny" and "All Work and No Play," quotes are just the tip of the iceberg of how Jack Torrance is a deranged man. He does chase his family around with an axe!
Jack Nicholson's Joker role in Burton's "Batman" will always the best in this writer's eyes (movies not TV show that is). He brought fun to the role but also the terror. There were jokes and crime all together in one package. Nicholson reminded one of the great, Sid Caesar but yet gave it his own role too
Randle McMurphy-"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"
He's no doubt remembered most for his role in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." It was and still is a very iconic role for Jack Nicholson. He won an Oscar for it too and the movie itself was the second movie to win all 5 major Academy Awards. Definitely if someone hasn't seen Jack in this movie should really start watching NOW!
"Chinatown," gave Nicholson another role where he won an Oscar for which this role actually is a year before "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" came out. Jack's role in this movie is a P.I. with a headache of a case and the film itself was directed by Roman Polanski. While his acting was great, it's also his appearance in the movie, his character's nose for instance: Photo.
Frank Costello-"The Departed"
The role of Costello was one of Nicholson's best of the 21st century and "The Departed," was one of the best movies of 2006. He was cunning, funny, disturbing, and well he played a great gangster role. He had been nominated for Supporting Actor but sadly didn't get it.
So those are just some of the roles that Jack Nicholson has been in and are some of his best. He's a great actor and there is no doubt about that.
