Jack and Jill went up Nob Hill - a parable

Jack and Jill met online, went up Nob Hill and Jill came tumbling down after. A pair parable.

What better way to test a fledgling relationship than a small misstep?

Jack D. and Jill T. met online at Chemistry.com  in July. Both were adjusting to being suddenly single and brand-new to the dating scene. Each had experienced a plethora of somewhat disappointing dates.

Jack liked Jill's profile and noticed they shared a passion for Roy Orbison, architecture, Ramblers, and San Francisco’s extraordinary Bakery Tartine.  Jill liked Jack’s mid-west roots and his interest in rock climbing and astronomy.

After two weeks of juggling calendars – they finally met for coffee and talked non-stop for two hours. They decided  their first real date should start at the Top of the Mark on Nob Hill.

That foggy summer's day in July, the two met at the glamourous Mark Hopkins and rode the special elevator up to the famous "Top” which was socked in by gray, cottony, fog. It was summer in the City, after all.

They devised a new plan which involved walking to Grace Cathedral and catching a Cable Car. As they were crossing the street, Jill stepped in a pothole, twisted her ankle and found herself on the ground. Jack helped her up and they backpedaled into the Huntington Hotel.

Jack got Jill seated, spoke to the concierge and in a flash, an ice pack and tea for two were delivered to their small table. Jack prescribed rest, ice, elevation and a tea party. He admitted to being both an Eagle Scout and a former basketball coach for his sons. He said he had seen dozens of sprained ankles over the years. Jack was as calm as Jill was embarrassed. He assuaged her fears about a broken bone, and assured her that a visit to the emergency room might be premature. It looked as though she had a very mild sprain.

Tea and Sympathy

The two spent a couple of hours talking and enjoying one another’s company. You can tell a great deal about a person in a crisis - or a twist of fate. It was a perfect afternoon at the Huntington with absolutely stellar service. They agreed to a rain-check for their Nob Hill excursion for the following Saturday. Jack put Jill in a cab with a kiss and a promise for a Top of the Mark memory-maker.
