J Mascis unveils new solo record in hilarious trailer

J Mascis” is just a search term for me these days; wherein I receive weekly Gmail notifications of some minor live appearances and mentions of Kim Gordon (and her minor live appearances) interspersed with some other out-of-context sightings of the Dinosaur Jr. front man and guitar assassin. So today’s news of a new solo record release (and accompanying promotional trailer) by the uber-chatty and outgoing Ambassador of Amherst is mildly exciting.

For the past few months, Mascis has been teasing videos and pictures of he and his Sweet Apple bandmates (his indie supergroup side project) roving around Western MA. Today’s release of “Every Morning,” the first single from Tied to A Star, Mascis’ third solo effort, includes an all-star cast of folks like Cat Power, Black Heart Procession's, Pall Jenkins, and local stars and notables, Mark Mulcahy and Ken Mauri helping out the Creaky One of Amherst.

In the promo trailer, in typical fashion, Mascis plays virtually mute in a wacky interview that’s continually interrupted by his son, while an overly aggressive interviewer (a high school friend and Sub Pop Record employee) virtually pulls words out of his mouth.

To be fair, listening to an advanced copy of Tied to A Star is a privilege and so worth it. It’s partially pop, or as far as Mascis can take that trope. It’s great. Vocals have never been his strength, but by studio trickery or will power, Mascis shines here.
