J.Mark's Restaurant: Steaks done right

Flame-grilled steak

J.Mark's Restaurant in Pompano Beach does steaks right. They serve 28-day dry-aged, certified Angus beef, and their steaks are tender, and grilled just the way you ordered them, over flaming live hardwood.

The first thing that you notice about this free-standing restaurant on the perimeter of the Pompano Square Mall is that it looks pleasantly out of place with its homey, inviting brickwork against the sterile backdrop of department store facades. It even has outdoor seating which with its lush landscaping and plant placement looks pleasant enough despite the fact that you are overlooking a parking lot.

Inside J.Mark's, the lights are low, and the overall design of the place feels as if you just stepped into a cozy mountain lodge. The menu is fairly pedestrian with the usual steaks and ribs, seafood choices like shrimp and salmon, chicken, pasta, and sandwiches, and prices are just about what you'd expect, but not what you could call a bargain.

One thing that struck me as a bit odd, was that even though my rib-eye cost just under $23, I still had to pay an additional $3.50 for a house or Caesar side salad. I took the Caesar salad which was little more than lettuce and a couple croutons. It really lacked any true Caesar flavor.

We were there early enough to benefit from Happy Hour, and the best deal of the night was the house cabernet sauvignon at $3.50 a glass.
