J.J. Abrams to direct 'Star Wars: Episode VII'

Star Wars fans are in for a treat today! Deadline reports that J.J. Abrams, the wunderkind director that brought us the recent blockbuster sci-fi flick Super 8 and the remake of Star Trek, will be helming the newest film in the franchise, which is aiming for a 2015 release.

Fans of the series are likely to be polarized by the announcement, but many will be happy to see that a big-time filmmaker is on-board to hopefully wash the bad taste of George Lucas' prequels out of their mouths. Star Wars has been ingrained in popular culture since its release in 1977, touching generations of fans and becoming a classic for all of the right reasons. It is readily apparent in Star Wars comic books, which have been on the stands for nearly as long as the movies, and have a dedicated fanbase of their own.

We all know that J.J. Abrams can do sci-fi, but can he reinvigorate the ailing cultural phenomenon that is Star Wars? Only time will tell!
