Deadline Hollywood reported yesterday that J.J. Abrams, the director in charge of the relaunched Star Trek franchise, is now attached to direct "Star Wars: Episode VII". According to a Deadline's source, “It’s done deal with J.J.”
Rumors are circulating that producer Kathleen Kennedy aggressively pursued J.J. for the position. As previously reported, Michael Arndt is currently working on the script.
J.J. Abrams is an interesting choice as he is identified with the successful reboot of Star Trek franchise. But, what happens if the audience feel that the two franchises are too similar in tone and vision? It should be noted that J.J. Abrams is also a producer on "Mission Impossible 5". That's a lot of major franchises. The concern would be that he's over-stretching himself and one of the franchises might end up shortchanged.
In the meantime, Disney and Kathleen Kennedy will probably be watching and assessing the success of J.J. Abrams' upcoming film, "Star Trek Into Darkness", which opens May 17, 2013.
