J.J. Abrams is confirmed to direct new 'Star Wars' film

Entertainment Weekly reports that J.J. Abrams is set to direct the next installment of the "Star Wars" franchise.

Abrams, having directed the 2009 "Star Trek" movie and the upcoming sequel, "Star Trek Into Darkness," is said to be very excited to take on the "Star Wars" project because he was a fan of the franchise growing up.

Abrams is no stranger to the sci-fi/fantasy genre. He is executive producer on the new NBC drama, "Revolution," and has also directed "Super 8," and the the first two "Lost" episodes.

Being an admirer of the original films, Abrams had this to say about the franchise: "Star Wars was the first movie that blew my mind....; it didn't matter how they did any of it because it was all so overwhelmingly and entirely great. It was funny and romantic and scary and compelling and the visual effects just served the characters and story."
