J Dilla's Donuts is a masterpiece. Donuts is a sonic magnum opus for the late great Detroit producer. It had the sound and feel that Dilla's fans had come to love but it also had a transcendent quality. Donuts was more of a work of art than a standard "beat tape" or "instrumental" collection. It encapsulated the essence of what Dilla's legacy had the potential to be if he had survived his battle with a rare blood disease. Dilla died three days after the release of the album.
The album, which began as an idea back in the summer of 2005 to take a demo beat tape and transform it into a full-length release. When Donuts was first released it was met with both scrutiny and curiosity for being a “rap album without rappers”. However, many Hip Hop enthusiasts have hailed Donuts as a classic and now Stones Throw Records is releasing a box-set of the album on seven 45s and a bonus 45. The bonus 45 features two tracks that were recorded prior to the original release of the album that have never appeared on vinyl.
